About Our Club

Despite the enormous progress that has been made by women in healthcare, gender discrimination and underrepresentation are still prevalent in the medical field. Many women are underrepresented in surgical specialties, such as neurosurgery, orthopedics, and general surgery. In these fields, women often fight against traditional gender norms, as surgeons are often seen as authoritative, tough, and stoic, traits aligning with traditional male gender roles. Women also face discrimination during residency interviews when they express an interest in pregnancy. Even after residency, women are unfairly passed up for leadership positions or tenure because of a desire to start a family.

Boston University Women in Medicine aims to empower undergraduate, pre-medical women in a male-dominated field by creating mentorship with a network of female doctors. Through mentorship, we hope to create conversation and help undergraduate pre-medical women develop the skills to succeed in their academic and professional careers.
